I stumbled upon this blog post and thought it very true for many women. Thankfully, most of the times, I can say that I know how to accept a compliment. After all, didn't your mama teach you how to say "Thank You"

Ken Hardy - Blink of an eye
Ken Hardy, another upcoming Saint Lucian artist. Hopefully I will be able to get an interview with him for the blog soon. I know Ken has been doing spoken word for some time now as well as music. This is his first music video available on YouTube. I'm sure with great music like this we will surely see more in the future.

Featured Artist: Claudius Medouze
Another friend of mine has granted me the pleasure of interview them. I present to you Claudius Medouze, a young spoken word artist from Saint Lucia who knows how to move you with his lyrical flow.
Hey Claudius, thank you for doing this interview with me. To get things started can you give the readers some background information about yourself.
I was born in Marisule, St. Lucia on June 8th 1987. I attended St. Mary's College, where I developed a passion for writing; however, I decided to focus on business and sports. After graduating in 2004, I was fortunate enough to obtain a position with the National Rugby team in St. Lucia, which is where I would spend the next six years developing my skills and pursuing my new passion, rugby. I also had the opportunity of being affiliated with three different Canadian Rugby Clubs, which gave me the chance to experience and explore a variety cultures and traditions. When I travelled to Canada little did I know that I would not only get to show off my rugby skills, but also discover a hidden talent of performing poetry; as I was met with the opportunity to perform a few of my pieces at an annual poetry festival in Sarnia, Canada. New to the poetry stage, I never write any of my poems, but rather memorize each of my pieces. I believe this gives me the advantage of focusing more on the performance aspect of my work. In October of 2009, I was bestowed with the honour of performing both in Trinidad, and Tobago for a campaign called "Stop the Violence", a campaign geared towards educating youths of the consequences associated with violence. I have used my gift of poetry to appeal to children in various schools throughout Tobago. I now am an active performer in events staged by Headpunk, recently took part in the Word Alive Poetry competition held in St. Lucia and was crowned the winner of the 2010 Ponm Damou Poetry Slam. i continue to pursue poetry and am hoping to make my mark not only on the stage, but also on the field, the rugby field that is.
How did you get involved in poetry and spoken word?
I got involved in poetry when I left college in 2004 writing poems for friends and for entertainment. Then I got more and more involved in performing poetry rather than the reading aspect. I wanted to express myself more so people could see a different side of me. I started writing poetry in my head. No paper or pen, just repetitive thoughts. Like memorising a song I just went over the poem several times in my head until I said it was completed. Doing this I focused more on the performing aspect of it. Leaving the audience with opened jaws. After performing for friends who were more involved in poetry than I was around St. Lucia, I was recommended by other artistes to perform. So after a few more performances, I began to take in the feedbacks from the audiences. Some of them came to me and told me that they really loved to see me perform and that they usually come just to hear me, some tell me that what I said touched them so much which usually leaves me with my mouth open for a lost of words, others finds it entertaining so from the love I have been receiving I got more and more involved in spoken word.
How do you source inspiration? What inspires you to write?
A good poet is able to find the natural rhythms of everyday life and express them eloquently in words. There are thousands of poems out there about tired subjects like love and war which got to me. As a poet, my job was to find either a new and original take on these overused subjects or bring an original idea to life. Most of my poems were based on social issues until I started branching out to areas that surrounds my life. In doing this I get to speak freely about heartaches felt, family and a lot more issues like women in society and friends. Whether they be good or bad. This gives me an advantage in performing the poem because it comes from the heart. Now I walk around and everything is inspiration to me. Look around you. Anything, anything at all can be the subject of a poem if dealt with in an original and creative matter. So most of the times I ask myself "What if?" This helps me explore everything in a poetical way. You just have to be creative. :) The way I interpret the world is different from most people so naturally my poetry will follow suite. My poems tend to be figurative and laced with metaphors but with a sense of the gritty reality that we all can touch and feel. I listen to a lot of spoken word pieces and found out that we all have different ways of saying what needs to be said. I just try to be more creative and take the audience on the journey I went on when writing my poems. Trying to make them feel what I felt, like my experiences and emotions. So to me spoken word has more of an advantage than other forms of poetry, because there are so many different ways artistes can bring out themselves that others can't.
What are your favourite pieces of writing and why?
An artiste I love would be Saul Williams. Saul Williams' tone in his poems are quite sharp and harsh. He doesn't really waste any time; the meanings are pretty much right there, but the allusions are what takes thought. In "Sha Clack Clack," Williams makes an allusion to Medusa, the woman with snakes for hair. Medusa turns her onlookers into stone, so goes the legend, and only one hero was finally able to behead her. This is an interesting allusion, and I think Saul Williams is using the character of Medusa to convey an image of some kind of horror or fear. Everyone was scared of Medusa, and this enhances the idea that Saul Williams is conveying. He is conveying a kind of fierce pride to be black in the face of racism. In "Penny for Thought," he makes an allusion to Barney, saying "A purple dinosaur that speaks of love, a black man that speaks of blood." This juxtaposition shows the violence that has happened because of racism, and how angry black people on a whole became during that time. He is just as real as it gets so I love his work.
What other elements of The Arts are you involved with?
I have been involved in drama including miming which I do in church. Spoken word is the part of the arts that I am more involved with.
What are your views on The Arts in Saint Lucia? What changes do you think will evoke necessary/positive change to The Arts?
Poetry is the study of the world around you and more importantly, the study of yourself and what you choose to speak about through the microphones. As it stands in St. Lucia, THE ARTS to me lives on in the lives of everyday people; unfounded talents, everyday living and expressive thoughts. We often say that the government isn't doing enough but forget to ask ourselves what are we doing? Even though you don't get the support you would like from the government it is up to us as a nation to understand what we want and find means and ways to achieve it. We can't wait for the government to help us, we must help ourselves before we can get help. Spoken Word in St. Lucia has now reached a pinnacle that some question, "is it a part of our culture." There is a group of talented individuals who saw a dream of reviving the ARTS in St. Lucia and did. This group is called Headphunk who single-handedly brought back hope to the ARTS in St. Lucia. They host a show every last Thursday of the month for all artistes whether you perform poetry, sing, dance, scream and shout or just a plain supporter of arts. Because of their work in St. Lucia, I can say that they are the biggest ARTS lovers in St. Lucia. At Headphunk the stage belongs to you the artiste. You get to perform with well known artistes like Boo Hinkson, Shane Ross, Naomie "Ngozi" Grandison to name a few. Now they are well known because they took it upon themselves to start a movement. so we need to learn from them.
Finally, what advice do you have for anyone who may be interested in performing poetry?
If you are interested you need to do research. Attend events, find time to explore the world around you. Take part in activities like workshops and open mics and shoot for the stars. Also you need to discover yourself as a poet, even a genius must do this. You need to peel off your skin, squeeze out your blood and soul from your body to discover you. When you are true to yourself, then and only the can you be true to the art, audience and the world around you. You must also remember that there is no greater Sin after the seven deadly than to flatter oneself into an idea of being a great .
I would like to thank Claudius for letting me pick his brain and share it with you. It truly was an honour to have interviewed him and I hope not only Saint Lucian readers but persons from all over the world can appreciate the words given to us by him. I would like to wish Claudius the best in all his future endeavours, whether on the stage or on the field.

What's Coming Up On The Dancer's Feet?
Hey Hey Hey!!!
Just wanted to give you a heads up on what to expect on the blog. I've sourced a few Saint Lucian Artists to interview. They are doing some big things and I think you deserve to know about them too. I started with Stephen Dantes and I'm finding more and more youth who I consider inspiration and role models.
So stay tuned for that! If you have any suggestions of persons I can interview or do features on please don't hesitate to share. Leave their name and/or contact information in the comments or you can email redempressvee@gmail.com
Thanks folks!
Stay blessed!

What the Statuses Say
Two friends posted the following as their Facebook status:
I don't think it funny the way children are being socialised. I think this method of "socialization" is very anti-social. How many times have you texted, bbmed, skyped, Facebook chat or sent an msn message to someone a few feet away from you or in the same house? Many people prefer virtual interactions to real live ones. We've lost track of how to interact with persons in the flesh and not behind a computer screen.
How many 7 year olds do you know with a cell phone? And the excuse the parents give you are to know where the child was. It's funny when you hear people in their 20s like me talking when I was 7 there was no cell phone to ask where are you? There were instructions given to the child saying after school go to your grandfather's house and wait there until I come from work. Or come to the office after work. I remember when I first moved in with my dad. Unknowingly he noted the time I came into the office on the first day I came to meet him. And for many days after that I came around the same time give or take 2 - 3 minutes. One day I came 10 minutes late (I made a detour through town) and he said how comes it took you longer to get here today? Where did you go? It hadn't clicked that he knew the time I came in, but from then I knew if I made detours I had to run! Okay no, I'm just joking. I knew he had his eye out for me. If I got there late I had a proper excuse and most times I didn't get there late. What ever happened to those days of giving a child instructions and the child knowing that they need to carry those out and in a timely fashion?
I understand that technology is a vital part of our lives but there are so many children that can't live without it. Where's the imagination? How much fun can you have if I gave you a cardboard box? At my (young) age of 23 I can have a lot of fun with a cardboard box. Can you?
What do you think about the status and the way in which people are socialized?
"When I was a kid I didn't have an XBox or Wii, there was this thing called a catapult. My curfew was the street lights and mom didn't call my cell, she yelled "time to come in." I played outside with friends, not online. If I didn't eat what my mom made me then I didn't eat. Social networking happened on the corner with all my friends. Repost if you drank water out of a hose and survived."Of course there will be variations of this as you say what you had when you were a child, example I had my imagination and my hands to be creative instead of an XBox and Wii. We did have video games but those came later and weren't as great as my imagination.

Learning To Manage
I can't deny that managing money is not something I do best. It definitely is work in progress and something I always have to be conscious of. The moment it slips to the subconscious it all goes down hill.
I want to travel for Christmas to visit my sister, brother-in-law and sweet sweet nephew (he's so cute!!). So starting from May 1st I am going to do the following with whatever moneys I collect:
I want to travel for Christmas to visit my sister, brother-in-law and sweet sweet nephew (he's so cute!!). So starting from May 1st I am going to do the following with whatever moneys I collect:
- take 10% out for offerings in church (or tithe)
- with the remainder I am going to take 30% and save for my trip and beyond, and the 60% left I am going to use for everything else - groceries, entertainment, clothing, etc.
This may be really tough, but I believe it will stop me from living paycheck to paycheck, allow me to save and also be a lot more conscious of what I do with my money. I've made a bit of money this year and I truthfully cannot say where it all went. I'm always broke and always needing things. So this challenge will help me to know where my money is going and know where it can be going.
Happy Saving and Spending!!

The Serenity Prayer
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him Forever in the next. Amen. In loving memory of--Reinhold Niebuhr Fr Bertram Griffin -- 1932-2000 Requiescat in Pace | |
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths. Proverbs 3, 5-6 |

Blogging
This may be one of those totally random and okkk why did she feel the need to type this and share it with us posts. Please be advised.
I like blogging. Justifiably I do think there are some posts I would like to delete, but for some reason I haven't gotten rid of them yet. I like being able to express myself, to share thoughts, feelings, my opinion with people...even if it's people I may or may not know or be aware of their presence on the blog.
When I began this blog it was suppose to be a space for me to "dance through different and new experiences and share that journey with everyone." I think my blog has evolved to just a general place of sharing. Sadly, I have no idea who reads my blogs regularly, occasionally or even seldom because people don't comment on the posts. It truly surprises me when people meet me or send me a message on Facebook to say I love your blog or that last post was really good. I wonder why they don't just comment. If you're one of those people leave a comment. It really makes my day when people comment on my posts, because then I know people actually read it. I know it's not the greatest blog in the world, and a lot of the times I ramble (actually no that's not true) and some posts are really simple. Not everything in life is complex. Some things really are simple.
If this is your first time reading a post I suggest looking through the archives lol. This might not be my best work. If it isn't and you're a regular, thanks for taking the trip inside my mind. If you're thinking of starting a blog but don't know what you'd blog about, don't let that stop you. Go for it. Take your time creating it. By the time you're done designing and decorating it you might have an idea of what you want to blog about.
Anywhos, I'm gonna end this post lol. I think I've tortured you enough.
You were warned.

The Unseen
Take photos of me while I'm asleep
and analyse my beauty
my thoughts
my fears
and dreams.
whatever the mood dampens the air
record the life of my unseen moments.
The funny
the ugly
the wonderful
and curious,
record them all and play them back for me
in black and white
or in color.
Tinted purple
or animated rays.
Capture the beauty I never get to see
and keep it in your heart.

Spirit
Regrets.
We should live without them,
but I can't help feeling like I've made mistakes
mistakes that I shouldn't have made,
things I should have done.
Maybe I should have risked it all
my sanity, time, energy, heart and soul
and pursued those dreams,
done what I loved,
what I wanted to do.
I keep moving forward in partial happiness.
Money temporarily satisfies me
but it doesn't make me happy.
I search for happiness in my "young" age.
I close my eyes while the music plays and even before the lids kiss I envision myself skipping along a stage.
Why did I give it up?
Why didn't I try harder?
I feel like these thoughts of "what am I doing here? why am I doing this? does this make me happy?" runs through my mind too many times.
So many times that I can't think of anything else but the possibility.
The what ifs.
What if I were happy?
We should live without them,
but I can't help feeling like I've made mistakes
mistakes that I shouldn't have made,
things I should have done.
Maybe I should have risked it all
my sanity, time, energy, heart and soul

done what I loved,
what I wanted to do.

Tell Me

if I thought I found someone new.
Someone that makes me smile the way you used to
Someone that causes my eyes to bare no lies
Someone that makes me forget and live
spin

Timothy Bloom - 'Til The End Of Time ft. V
WOW. I mean you have to watch this twice. Once with your eyes open and once with your eyes closed. Putting the specimen of black beauty aside this song is wonderful and powerful. I'm going to keep my eye out for this guy right here.
Enjoy!

My Piece of History
Today I was at work and randomly decided that I should print a collection of my poems, written thoughts, favourite quotes and the likes. I'm not really sure where it came from, but I really liked the idea. I convinced myself that it wasn't that wild of an idea, because I remembered my friend, and Dancer's Feet Featured Artist - Stephen Dantes did such.
I guess now the process will be to find a name for the compilation, illustrations if I desire (and of course I do desire), and which recorded words shall be published?
Let the collection of my history begin

The World Is Reading
I needed to rant and could have easily opened up my blog and posted it there, but I decided not to do so. Instead I opened up Facebook, when into my notes and scribbled it down as a draft, never to be published.
Whatever you post on the internet is somehow permanent; written for the world to behold. Now praises and good reviews for sure can be shared easily, but when it comes down to venting we need to be careful. Maybe you need to write it down and burn the paper you wrote it on, or say it to a tree or wall. If you type something up you never know who's going to read it.
Even these posts for both my blogs. I have 6 official followers for this blog and 1 official one for The Spotted Fashionista, but that doesn't mean that many other people don't stumble across my blog and check out what I've written. You never know who's eyes are watching and reading your thoughts, aspirations and disgruntling moments.
With that being said, I'm about to delete that draft now that my chest is clear.
Peace!!

Random Post
Hello all,
For some odd reason I feel the need to post the following things as "reminders" or "advice." It's said God works in mysterious ways right? Who knows?
Ok! So I think it is important to
For some odd reason I feel the need to post the following things as "reminders" or "advice." It's said God works in mysterious ways right? Who knows?
Ok! So I think it is important to
- Brush your teeth as many times a day as possible. Why limit it to just twice a day? If you can do it after every meal, why wouldn't you? Everyone loves fresh breath =D
- Floss daily. Again why not twice a day? In the morning and before bed? It's advised that you floss before bed because it's during your sleep the crazy stuff happens in your mouth.
- Drink water!! Back in the day when I was younger (hahaha I just wanted to say that) I drank a lot more water and used a lot less pain killers. It was my modus operandi to only use pain killers for two things - toothaches and back aches. If it wasn't one of those, I would drink water and call it a day. My threshold for pain obviously was a lot higher then. I think I definitely will have to return to that...
- Learn to treat yourself, yourself. I'm all for pampering yourself, but why not do it yourself? You for one save money and two it's a good skill to use on other people. Learn to give yourself a pedicure, a manicure, your own make up, shape your own eyebrows, whatever...you get the picture. Why not learn to do it yourself? Plus it gives you something to do.
- Clean regularly. Don't wait for things to get dirty to clean. I think I need to keep telling myself this one lol. Don't wait till my room is like a sty to clean it. Take half an hour every day or every week and just clean. Vacuum the carpet, dust, laundry, fold clothes. There's so much to do and if you stay on top of it, you can't feel overwhelmed by it. Right?
- Challenge yourself creatively. I'm working on making a skirt from a shirt on my other blog [The Spotted Fashionista - http://thespottedfashionista.blogspot.com/ (Kerol this is for you lol)] I think this keeps me going, leeps my mind moving. I get bored easily. So whether it's sewing, baking, cooking, reading, writing, drawing, reworking your wardrobe, challenge yourself.
- Don't suppress your inner child. Why the frankincense would you want to do that? Take out a piece of paper and doodle, then get crayons and colour it. It's so healthy for you to be in touch with your inner child. Don't judge yourself and be a perfectionist. Let the imperfections shine through and embrace them. Who wants to be perfect anyway??
- Take a walk. Even if it's winter (amen it's spring now) open the window for a few minutes, take a walk. The "fresh" air will do you good.
- Sing.
- Dance

Some things are for dreamers
I was going to post this as my Facebook status but I changed my mind and decided to make a post about it here. I think there has only been once on this blog where I have ranted about things happening in my country. I think I may make it a habit to post my thoughts on development and my opinion as to how things can go. Of course I will have a disclaimer to say that I do not work with the government so I am not fully aware of how things work, but in my mind I wonder why this isn't happening.
I'm a bit tired right now, but I'm not pleased to know that I will be going to sleep with the thought of my dreams never materializing. It's a sad and scary thought: pondering whether the hopes, dreams and aspirations one has for a place so dear to her heart will ever materialized, and if so at what cost? Some days I wonder if I have lived on Earth already, in a past life, for the zeal and enthusiasm and understand that I believe I possess (I may be wrong and actually be naive) is out of this world. Why do I love my country so much? Why do I exude such national pride? I will have to investigate this. But until then, I'm off to la-la land to dream up more brilliant ideas about development that can be done the proper way for my country.
Good night my big dreamers, big workers, big motivators and big supporters. To the haters, see beyond what is in front of you. Have some vision.
